In 2014 Sow True Seed had a meeting to discuss how they could better educate people on growing great garlic. We decided to host some garlic growing workshops, but everyone got a little over excited. Our accountant made a big batch of garlic hummus, our tech guy made some garlic ice cream. We had garlic cookies, garlic sprinkles and garlic growing classes that ran all day. At some point we started calling it Garlic Fest and hundreds of people turned up! Now in it's third year, we have 25 local vendors offering a whole range of creative garlic treats on the WNC Garlic Trail, six free classes on growing, preserving and eating garlic, music, garlic games and more!
Asheville is a vibrant and exciting place to be and the South Slope definitely lives up to that reputation. The South Slope is a developing and ever changing part of town, with new businesses and people discovering it all the time. Fifth Season Gardening and Sow True Seed like to think of it as the Gardening District. Catawba, Twin Leaf, Green Man, Burial, The Funkatorium probably have a better claim to the Brewary District. Either way, it's a wonderful location for WNC Garlic Fest. Come sample some garlic, learn some stuff and enjoy a locally brewed pint!
